Scholarly Contributions of Allama Ghulam Mustafa Noori to the Sciences of Hadith: An Analytical Study in the Context of the Scholars of Sahiwal
Abstract
This research study presents a comprehensive analysis of the scholarly and hadith-related contributions of Allama Ghulam Mustafa Noori, particularly within the intellectual background and scholarly tradition of the scholars of Sahiwal. Allama Noori is counted among those scholars who combined the sciences of Hadith, Sunni theology, and a reasoned polemical style, thereby playing an effective role in contemporary religious discourse. His services were not confined to teaching and writing; rather, in scholarly dialogue between Ahl al-Sunnah and Ahl al-Shi‘ah, he adopted a rational and evidence-based approach that helped pave the way for mutual understanding and intellectual clarity. In the field of ʿUlum al-Hadith, Allama Noori addressed numerous issues on the foundations of isnād analysis, al-jarḥ wa al-taʿdīl (critical evaluation of narrators), and principles of juristic deduction.. His works, including Tarkah Rafʿ al-Yadayn and Kutub Sunan al-Arbaʿah mein Tark Rafʿ al-Yadayn, reflect his scholarly efforts on this subject, while Jarḥ al-Jārḥīn contains detailed research on narrators and hadith critics. In the domain of theology, his writings such as ʿAqāʾid Ahl al-Sunnat, Mushkil Kushā Nabī, Wasīlah al-Kawnayn, Mushāhidah-e-Nubuwwat, Taʿẓīm-e-Muṣṭafā, Nūrāniyyat-e-Nabawī, and ʿIlm al-Ghayb present reasoned explanations of traditional Sunni beliefs. He supported doctrines such as the life of the prophets, the intercession of Muhammad ﷺ, prophetic authority, the finality of prophethood, the conveyance of reward (īsāl al-thawāb), and the life in the grave, through arguments drawn from Qur’anic verses, Prophetic traditions, and the statements of leading imams. His well-known work Jāmiʿ al-Dalāʾil fī al-Ḥadīth wa al-ʿAqāʾid systematically clarifies the methodological relationship between hadith and creed.Within the scholarly environment of Sahiwal, Allama Noori’s services helped define a distinct intellectual direction. Rather than adopting a purely polemical tone, he preferred a research-oriented and reasoned style, attempting to transform scholarly disagreement into constructive dialogue.
