Family and Social Impacts on Widowed Women in Tehsil Jand

Abstract

This research study examines the multifaceted family, social, and economic challenges faced by widowed women residing in Tehsil Jand, District Attock. In the rural and semi-urban socio-cultural landscape of Pakistan, the death of a spouse extends far beyond a deeply personal emotional tragedy; rather, it marks a drastic, structural shift in a woman's social standing, personal security, and functional role within both her household and the broader community. Grounded firmly within a patriarchal sociological framework, this investigation explores how deep-seated cultural norms, rigid traditional practices, institutional gaps, and pervasive economic barriers converge to systematically marginalize widows during one of the most vulnerable periods of their lives.

Within the immediate family structure, the research highlights critical issues such as the abrupt loss of household decision-making authority, strained and often hostile relationships with in-laws, and heavy financial dependency. In the specific context of Tehsil Jand, widows frequently struggle to claim their legitimate property and land inheritance rights, which are routinely blocked, delayed, or entirely ignored by male family members exploiting loopholes in social customs. On a broader social level, these women experience profound isolation, restricted personal freedom and mobility, and subtle yet damaging forms of discrimination during family and community gatherings due to lingering, antiquated social prejudices associated with widowhood.

Additionally, the immense physical and mental pressure of acting simultaneously as the sole financial provider and the primary caregiver for dependent children exposes them to severe chronic stress, anxiety, and eventual social exclusion. By utilizing a mixed-method research approach—combining structured surveys with in-depth qualitative interviews—this study captures the everyday lived realities of widows in Tehsil Jand and explores the psychological and survival coping strategies they rely on. Ultimately, this paper calls for urgent, targeted community awareness programs, strict legal enforcement of inheritance laws, and stronger governmental and community-level social support systems to empower these women, safeguard their fundamental human rights, and help them secure a dignified, independent place in mainstream society.
