Abstract

The rapid advancement of generative artificial intelligence (AI), adaptive learning technologies, and big data analytics has triggered unprecedented structural shifts in global higher education. However, traditional Islamic educational institutions (Madaris) and Islamic universities face unique systemic, philosophical, and pedagogical challenges in adopting these digital paradigms without compromising their core theological and ethical foundations. This paper introduces the Smart Madrasa 2050 (SM-2050) framework, a comprehensive, multi-dimensional, and strategically aligned model designed to guide the ethical, philosophical, and technological evolution of Islamic higher education over the next quarter-century. Integrating Maqasid al-Shariah (the higher objectives of Islamic law) with Systems Theory, Constructivism, Outcome-Based Education (OBE), and Responsible AI principles, the SM-2050 model establishes a rigorous, fifteen-pillar ecosystem. This framework comprehensively addresses smart governance, AI-driven curricula, hyper-personalized learning environments, ethical AI governance, and cybersecurity alongside regional-global community integration. Additionally, we formulate the Smart Madrasa Readiness Index (SMRI), providing an empirical mathematical matrix to evaluate institutional digital maturity. Through a comparative study across eleven national jurisdictions—including Pakistan, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, and Finland—we outline localized adaptation pathways. Ultimately, SM-2050 bridges the historical chasm between sacred tradition (Naql) and modern intellectual and computational innovation (Aql), establishing a sustainable roadmap for global Islamic scholastic excellence in the mid-21st century.
